Why it’s hipster approved: Really? Do I need to even answer this? Collecting vinyl records is as essential to the well-being of a hipster as watching David Lynch films or sharing their unwanted political opinions. Hipsters swear that the sound of vinyl can’t be beat and they’re very snobby about the whole thing. Remember in the movie High Fidelity when a customer asks for I Just Called to Say I Love You for his daughter and Barry says, “Do we look like the kind of store that sells I Just Called to Say I Love You? Go to the mall.”? That about sums it up. Vinyl collecting hipsters are like a cult. They love to impress their hipster friends with rare pressings on colored vinyl of unknown side projects from indie musicians. Each record in their collection has a memory attached, whether it be how hard a certain record was to find or something else. Most people think vinyl collecting is a waste of time since we have digital downloads now. A few years back some genius came up with the idea of offering a free mp3 version of the album when you buy the vinyl. This way everyone wins. Hipsters get the album art and the vinyl, but still have a digital format. Brilliant.
*You know you’re a hipster if you’re bothered by me referencing High Fidelity the movie and not High Fidelity the book….busted, you little elitist hipster you!
What hipsters won’t admit: I love vinyl just as much as the next guy, but vinyl has to be the dumbest format ever. Look at it wrong and it gets scratched or warped. Even 8 Track tapes were built better. 180 gram vinyls are much more enduring, but a hipster will avoid the 180 gram versions of their favorite albums like the plague. Why you ask? Because it means that 180 gram copy is usually a re-issue and hipsters don’t do re-issues.
How to impress a hipster: Here’s a no-brainer. Have an awesome vinyl collection. I’m not talking Devo or The B-52s, that stuff turns up at thrift stores all the time. I mean those rare limited pressings from Factory Records circa 1979-80, Japanese pressings of Goblin’s soundtrack for Dawn of the Dead or German 7″ releases of Panic or This Charming Man by The Smiths. Happy hunting (and e-bay is cheating)!
